"The Hole in the Ground" was a comic song which was written by Myles Rudge and composed by Ted Dicks. When recorded by Bernard Cribbinsand released by EMI on the Parlophone label in 1962, it was a hit in the UK charts.
The photo is of the vast Mir Mine in Russia. The entire city next to it is sinking into it and is being "relocated". The hole can be see from space.
