Less than two decades after the removal of a border defence to keep people in, Bulgarian authorities have begun building a new fence along the Turkish border to keep people out. Established to repel refugees travelling up through Turkey from the Middle East, the wall currently stretches 21 miles, but the idea is that it will seal off the entire 149-mile land border. And with more migrants expected to attempt the journey as the weather improves, the pressure is on to complete it soon. “We are expecting a surge of refugees in April and May,” said Jordan Malidov, director of a Bulgarian refugee centre. “And it is common when there is war for the numbers to increase.”
